I hope my book, Justin Fashanu: The Biography, is a more accurate and fair account of Justin Fashanu’s life than those you found on the internet.

I love your eloquently-expressed enthusiasm for the goal. Justin, himself, spoke about it rather beautifully a few months after the event: ‘The opportunity rises out of the blue and if you make all the right decisions and luck is on your side then the miracle of perfection takes place.’

Great article, containing the necessary nuances. Although I was involved in soccer during 11 years (1988-99) I never had the occasion to meet him. Seems unbelievable today, but remember at that time no Internet, nor Google were available. And watch BBC in Belgium was very difficult. Despite his almost overall stated appetite for cash money, it seems to have been a witty, charming and easy-going boy. What a pity he decided the only way out was to take his own life. Fortunately, people like you seem eager to honour his memory, so that it can be hoped he didn’t die for nothing. Thanks for him.

I had almost forgotten how magnificent this goal was. Love the understated celebration!

When Fashanu was at Hearts I went to see them play Partick Thistle but he was not in the squad.

Remarkably during the first half he decided to leave the rest of the Hearts contingent in the directors box and clambered into the stand were the Partick supporters were sitting.

To their great credit , speaking as a Celtic man, the Partick supporters left him in peace. I spoke to my brother about this after the game and we both sensed that this was a young man who seemed to be in a lot of pain.

When I heard of his death I thought it was sad but I was not suprised.
